From the exterior, this doesn't look like the flashiest place around, but it sure has substance. Nice little sheltered beach (but bring your sandals or water shoes), perfectly situated and maintained pool, extremely friendly and helpful staff. Our unit (#10) was well-kept, attractive, and had all desired amenities.

I booked Apt. 10 at Chrisann's as a surprise for my husband's birthday and was thrilled with the accommodations and staff. The apartment was fully stocked with games, books, ironing board, blow dryer, beach towels and even snorkeling gear! The kitchen had everything you need to prepare great meals and we were even welcomed with a gift bag that contained some specialty items (including a bar of soap which I had forgotten at home!) Cathy did a marvelous job of tending to our needs and immaculately cleaned the apartment every day and we felt very pampered. The apt. owner's recommendation of Glenn's Restaurant across the street was fantastic, great authentic food and service, along with the Jerk Center within walking distance. We rented a car but staff will arrange for anything you want, fresh fish, lobster, taxi's, specific items from the store, and they even set up a couple of tables for our large Chrisann's group to have dinner by the pool one night. Our TV in Apt. 10 even had the NFL playoff games on while our friends in other apartments didn't have access so we really appreciated that taste of home too. We plan on returning to Chrisann's on a more frequent basis and will definitely request Apt.10! Stayed Jan 12-24, 2015

Owner Response: Thanks so much for your kind words, and we're so glad you had a great time. We'll be sure to pass on your compliments to Cathy and the rest of the staff. Best, Marian

We really enjoyed staying at Marian's place. It is clean and comfortable, and the staff, and Marian's recommendations for other people--especially Kristy's taxi service--were great. Cathy made us a great meal of curried chicken and rice and beans. We would have had her cooked more. We liked the location very much--we thought of renting a car but decided we didn't need one. Glenn's across the street was a good place for any meal. Not much of a beach at this place but you can easily walk to Bamboo (previously Reggae Beach) Beach. Take a route taxi to Moxon's just to the east, which has stunning views and good restaurant and snorkeling. Walk to the spa at Couples Tower Island resort nearby for a very luxurious massage (we got a day pass for there too which is pricey at $100 per person, but lots of free food, drinks and activities for the price). Best of all Toscanini is right down the road. We explored outside of the immediate area a little bit, but mostly stayed in the neighborhood nearby. We were happy with our choice to stay in this modest but very comfortable accommodation, and spend money going out.

Owner Response: Thanks so much Miguel for your kind words. Glad you had a good vacation and I look forward to hosting you again. Regards, Marian

It was not the biggest room but the arrangement made it very spacious. It was very cute and felt like a home away from home with practically everything we needed being in place. Everything from a fully equipped kitchen to board games, beach towels, cable tv, a mini balcony, hot water, air conditioning and even diving goggles. The staff was courteous and housekeeping did a good job of making sure things were in order and over all the entire experience was good value for our money.

We stayed in apartment 10 for three weeks. It was so peaceful and relaxing that we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The staff at Chrisanns were all so delightful! Kathy and Charmaine did a beautiful job of keeping our apartment clean and tidy. Jennifer was always a pleasure to meet and talk to during our stay. Chase and Trevor were very interesting and fun to be around. Marianne always treated us with the utmost care and concern. She dealt with any issues that came up promptly and always responded to our queries. The apartment now has a new fridge and a new toaster. Thank you Marianne for all your patience when our deposit check got lost in the mail. The pictures reflect the apartment amenities. For those of you who may rely on Wi-Fi, we were best able to connect with our small laptop, then a blackberry playbook and the iPad mini provided the least reliable connections. While staying there, others with the regular iPad were able to connect from a further distance away from the lobby.

We chose this condo for a week's holiday in Jamaica. Although we considered a few places in Ocho Rios (and elsewhere on the North coast), most seemed to promise to be too noisy. Other possible rentals were secluded, but not close to anything particularly interesting. This condo is close enough to Ocho, Dunn's, etc., and also has restaurants and a grocery store as well as Reggae Beach within walking distance. The condo's pool and sheltered cove mini-beach may not match those of the big all-inclusives, but are adequate and user friendly. The host Marian and the housekeepers are very helpful and available. Condo has extras such as cable TV, WiFi, games, books, snorkel gear, kitchen utensils. It is beautifully decorated and very clean and neat. You can manage without a rental car though, if you can adjust to left side driving, a car makes things easier.

Owner Response: Hi George: Glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves. For folks who prefer a mellow hideaway, my condo is the place. Please refer your friends to my condo, and looking forward to hosting you again soon. Regards, Marian

    • Lovely Condo...but local problems are an issue.

This condo and resort are very pretty, the unit is well stocked, and resort staff are very friendly. The pictures listed represent this condo well and we really loved the house-keeping staff! The resort is well secured and a guard does watch the gate and lot - though friends of ours had something taken from their rental car (unlocked). The AC works very well in the condo, the equipment all works except that the remote for the DVD is broken and needs to be replaced. The weather was beautiful and the resort grounds were immaculately maintained by staff. And taking advantage of the rental cell phone was a big help during our stay. However during our 8 day stay, the water was out one day, the power off for another day, and the internet only worked 1 day out of our entire stay. The Chrisanns resort internet also was very difficult to access meaning that we and other guests had to grab an internet signal from Glens Restaurant across the road even though we advised staff of these issues. After pre-booking them, the bus company Tropical Tours suddenly refused to come pick us up at Chrisanns to take us back to the airport so we had to take a taxi in to town to catch their bus. Since renting a car is problematic for those of us used to driving on the right side of the road (our friends got in an accident), I would recommend that people renting this suite plan their entire stay out with excursions before hand so that you don't end up with "cabin fever." Staying at the condo is no problem though since the grocery/liquor store and Glens Restaurant are right across the street, the pool is nice, and the ocean is just a few steps further away. I did swim out to the ocean and snorkled every day and saw fish of all types, colors, and sizes. Entrance to the ocean is dicey though when you have to swim through the rock barrier. Taxi prices were high and all service type people outside the condo are demanding tips. We took a trip to Glistening Waters (amazing by the way) and the negotiated taxi fair with tip came to 120 US$ - and I am not sure there is a way around those prices. The grocery store is well stocked but does not have a lot of fresh vegetables - yet it does provide a currency exchange service from US$ to Jamaican. ATM is a taxi ride away - so bring a lot of cash remembering that the exchange rate is 90 or 100$ Jamaican to every 1$ USD. So while Jamaica is lovely and Chrisanns is a pretty & sweet little resort, we are not sure we would come back.

Owner Response: Dear Isabelle: Thanks so much for your detailed review. Thanks for your compliments about the Chrisanns’ staff, and I‘ll be sure to pass on your kind words to them. I’m glad you were comfortable in my condo, and I’ll be sure to get a new DVD remote. The WiFi inside my apartment has been an ongoing problem, and despite repeated repairs, the signal still isn’t working continually. The WiFi dealer says the local topography keeps interfering with the signal, so the best thing is to access WiFi in the entry lobby. Jamaica is a developing country and the power and water supply do go off from time to time, but these outages only last for a few hours. Some locals do hustle visitors in the resort areas, so you have to keep your wits about you when walking around the local towns. And Jamaica can be expensive in terms of taxis and some attractions if you’re on a tight budget. However the US$120 you paid for your taxi trip to Glistening Waters in Trelawney was the right price, as a taxi excursion to Bob Marley’s birthplace and mausoleum which is much nearer to Chrisanns than Glistening Waters is US$100. Thanks as well for your feedback about your difficulty with Tropical Tours. I’ll be contacting other bus companies as alternatives. Hope you’ll consider coming back to Jamaica. The peace and laid back vibe of Chrisanns will always be waiting for you! Regards, Marian

    • Quiet Beach-side a Plus

Reviewed by MGM-DEG from California, USA on September 08, 2012 for their trip during July 2012

We traveled to Jamaica at the end of July 2012 for just over a week after having researched several destinations including Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios. While our research pointed to Negril, we opted for Ocho Rios on the basis of additional on-the-ground advice by our extended family that live in Jamaica. We also decided that a more intimate resort located on the beach would be preferable to a large all-inclusive however, we soon discovered that the activities that we understood would be abundantly available were only to be found at the much larger all-inclusive resorts. We tend to agree with some aspects of previous reviews that distinguish between expectations of the term “resort” versus what we might describe as an apartment complex. Chrisann’s Beach Resort is definitely the latter. The sea views were very nice and the breeze welcomed; however, the “beach” aspect of the property was not what we had envisioned. While it was great that it was private and that there was a breaker, we had anticipated that we might enjoy evening strolls along the beach. We stayed in unit # 10 and found it to be nice, although if you plan to lounge, the sofa is very compact and requires some horizontal gymnastics to maneuver with two people! The kitchen, while a bit constrained, was reasonably well-stocked with utensils. The loft layout was nice and we are sure that we must have had the most effective a/c in the complex! One just needs to be very careful descending the stairs because the tread depths are shallow and there are a couple of generous risers that may surprise you at the bottom of the stair, so just as a note of caution – take care in this area. The bed was spacious and comfortable however the dressers were locked and there was no place to hang one’s clothes, so we really did feel as though we were “living out of a suit case”! The staff were very kind and helpful. Of particular help to us was having the owner of the condo offer detailed insights and tips well in advance of our stay. Thanks Marian!! We hired a well-known taxi driver – Kevin – he was fantastic! We then used him for all of our “custom” travel needs. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to relocate to unit # 22 for the last two nights of our stay. Our move to this unit left us very disappointed – it really ought to be upgraded – sure unit # 24 is quite special, but some units fall well below that threshold.

Owner Response: Dear Murray Thanks so much for your very comprehensive review! I really appreciate the tome you took to give me such useful feedback. I’d like to respond to your points for your benefit and that of future guests: Beach: Chrisanns’s private beach is small, as we’re located between two other beachfront properties. So no long walks on the beach, sorry! But Reggae Beach is next door to us. It’s much bigger and private too. The benefit with Chrisanns beach though is that it’s private and peaceful. Sofa: I removed two bulky back cushions and the sofa is much more comfortable now. I found it too bulky myself. Kitchen: I added an electric can opener, as the manual ones rust quickly as the condo is by the sea. I also got an electric kettle, which heats water faster than the stove or microwave. I keep adding or replacing appliances as needed. Staircase: The treads are steep, especially if you have young kids. I plan to modify the angle of the stairs by next summer so they won’t be so steep. Bedroom dresser: The top drawer is locked but the other two are open. The wood tends to expand in he sea air so I’m having the drawers planed to making it easier to open them. Clothing storage: There’s a wooden rack on the bedroom wall to hang clothes but I’ll install another one. There’s also a closet downstairs in the living room, but you’re right, if you want privacy to dress in the bedroom, I need to put in more hanging space. Other apartments: Each one is owned by different people so interiors and amenities vary. I agree that Apt 24 is very beautiful, and right by the beach. Thanks again for all your comments and I look forward to hosting you and your family again soon. Best, Marian

Owner Response: Thanks for the review Arleta: Chrisanns has its own private beach and is located between two other properties with their own private beaches as well. All the properties have built sea walls with gazebos at the end, so it's not possible to walk from one beach to another. However, our visitors still enjoy Chrisanns' private beach because there are no vendors or hustlers coming onto the beach to disturb our guests. • Quaint Cottage in Jamaica

Reviewed by Redbull from Ontario, Canada on March 06, 2012 for their trip during February 2012

Our family of five (kids aged 2, 4 and 6) stayed in this lovely, quaint unit in February 2012. Check-in was smooth – the housekeeper Charmaine was literally waiting at the front desk with the key. We found the unit to be clean and comfortable. It was fully equipped with all the necessities – French press coffee maker, kettle, scissors, pots, pans and even plastic dishes for the kids. It felt like we were borrowing someone’s cottage in Jamaica for a week! The fridge worked well and froze our kids’ freezies and ice very quickly! While there was a pull-out couch, we all slept together in the bed upstairs. The kids enjoyed the beach toys, pool noodles and flutter boards. We had brought our own snorkel equipment, but Marion had provided some in the unit, as well. The air conditioner works very well, but we rarely needed to use it. We would often run it for 30 minutes before bed to bring the temperature down, and then sleep with only a fan. The wireless internet in the unit did not work for us – there may have been a problem with the router. However, we took it as a message that we needed to detach from home! We were able to connect to the wireless signal in the lobby with no problems. One caution for having young children in this unit is that the stairs in the unit are indeed steep and narrow. I would recommend the unit to kids aged 4 and over for this reason. We had to keep a close eye on our inquisitive, wandering 2-year-old! For food, we stocked up at the local Petcom grocery store. We rarely cooked in the unit, but purchased most of our meals at Glenn’s restaurant across the street. We ate one or two meals from the Jerk Centre, but didn’t enjoy it as much as Glenn’s. When we ran out of items, we also purchased some things from the small supermarket across the street. For transportation, we used the licensed red plate taxis. Trips into Ocho Rios were a standard $100 JMD per adult (kids were free). It was a great adventure for our kids who are used to being strapped into car seats! Trips home varied in price, but we soon learned that we needed to stand by the big clock in downtown Ochi to catch drivers who were responsible for the Oracabessa route that leads back to Chrisann’s. We truly enjoyed our stay. We didn’t notice any bugs and the resort was extremely quiet. The only thing missing from this unit is a direct view of the sea while inside. However, being just steps from the water made our stay truly worthwhile. Thanks!

Owner Response: Dear Bob and Lisa: Thanks so much for your very detailed and factual review. And thanks for all your kind words! Sorry the WiFi inside my apartment didn't work. What usually helps is to plug out the router, wait a few seconds and plug it back in again. Thanks for letting me know as I'm only in my apartment in January and July so I don't always hear about these problems unless guests let me know. There is an ongoing problem with WiFi in this area though, and sometimes the reception lobby signal trips out too. Thanks as well for the feedback about the need to be careful with very young kids on the staircase. I'll let other guests know about this. I truly appreciate your taking the time to write such an informative review. Glad to hear you had a good time, and I look forward to hosting all of you again soon. Best wishes, Marian

We had an enjoyable stay at Chrisann's (a few miles east of Ocho Rios, or "Ochi" in Tower Isle) and loved being able to wake up in the morning, make our own coffee & breakfast and eat on the patio, take a dip in the saltwater (with goggles provided), sit by the pool, and then swim later in the day. Inside #10 was clean and attractively decorated with fans and A/C to use as needed. Only a few downsides to Chrisann's, all relatively minor -- some noisy frogs at night (had to turn on an extra fan to drown them out), a running toilet (told condo mgmt and they sent someone to fix it ASAP), an oven & 1 stove burner that we couldn't get to work, some construction going on in another unit during the day, and some of the exterior down near the beach could use a bit of love & paint (and a new beach chaise or two since some are breaking). Also I picked a bit of debris off the beach on our first morning because the seas had been rough -- and hope I didn't offend the staff by asking for a bag. We took advantage of the grocery/ jerk center across the street -- and while Glenn's food was OK, it was relatively pricey. Loved our visit to the St. Mary's farmer's market (across from Couples San Souci) on Friday -- and made a picnic lunch of veggies & took with us on an afternoon drive west toward Galina to see the coastline; also made some fresh grapefruit juice using fruit from the farmers market & a juicer in #10's kitchen. Also used the shared "red plate" taxis to go into Ochi 2x (and avoided the driving madness around town centre) to visit some shops and have dinner at Miss T's (an oasis a few blocks from the "clock tower"). Enjoy!

Owner Response: Hi Rebecca Thanks for your detailed review. Thanks for pointing out the problems you had with the stove and oven. I'll check on that ASAP. Sorry the whistling frogs kept you up at night. They are found all over the Caribbean! They are like the night crickets in Hawaii. Chrisanns is always fixing up the property and some owners are doing interior remodeling, hence the construction noises you heard. We already removed the broken chaise lounges and are buying some new ones. Thanks again for your honest and valuable feedback! Look forward to hosting you again (and bring earplugs to block out the noise of the night frogs!) Miss T's restaurant in Ocho Rios is wonderful for Jamaican food. I eat there all the time! My husband and I stayed here from January 2, 2011-January 6. This is our 3rd trip to Jamaica and have previously stayed at Sandals in Montego Bay. After staying here, we will never go back to a resort! We had everything we needed in the apartment. There are 2 grocery stores across the street that have what you need to cook in your apartment. There are also 2 restaurants across the street too that are moderately priced and very convenient! The size of the apartment was more than enough for the 2 of us. There was a nice living space, bathroom, and kitchen downstairs. The living space leads right to the balcony. We had our friends over from the area and the 7 of us had enough space to sit together, drink some Red Stripes and play dominoes and pass ron' donkey. The views from anywhere at the building are just amazing. Unfortunately, when we visited there was a "cold" front that made sun tanning and snorkeling not a viable option for us, but we had a great time swimming/body surfing and watching the waves crash against the rocks! For $2 U.S. we took a taxi into downtown Ocho Rios a few times. If you go downtown, eat at Captain's--yum! And if you take a taxi, just hop in one and pay them once you get there. From the apartment to downtown it is $100 if you give $3 US that is more than enough! They will not question you or ask you for more. The taxi driver's can easily spot a tourist...asking for $1000 JA for that ride! If you walk out of the gates and turn left, there is a small beach area that we really enjoyed. We ran into only one other visitor there. There's a couple of fishermen that work/live on that beach area but they did not hassle us or anything--they were super friendly. We paid $100 at the airport at the Tropical Tours desk for roundtrip transportation to and from the apartment. It was a very long ride because we were the last stop, but it was also a very beautiful, scenic ride! Word of caution: Just before you get into the Ocho Rios downtown area, the bus stops at a bar and they invite you to get a beer and stretch your legs. DO NOT GET A BEER! They charge you $4 per Red Stripe and $8 per mixed drink! (You should pay $2 per beer and maybe $5 per mixed drink.) If you book here, Marian, the owner, provides you with lots of information and is very quick to respond to any emails you send her. We highly recommend staying at this apartment--you will be very happy!

Owner Response: Dear Amanda: Thanks so much for your detailed and informative review. I learned some new things from you such as the small beach near to Chrisanns. I never knew about this fisherman's beach! I'll be sure to look for it next time I'm at Chrisanns. You also gave us all some great tips about local transportation. Looking forward to hosting you and Nick again very soon! Best Marian

We enjoyed our three day stay at the Beachfront Condo; it was very relaxing. The condo is located a few miles out of Ocho Rios which turned out to be perfect. We wanted to stay somewhere where we could cook and the condo was fully stocked with all the pots, pans, etc that we would need. (We also ate across the street.) The condo is comfy and homey. The stairs are narrow to get upstairs to the bedroom but the king size bed was extremly comfortable. The only problem we encountered was with the internet connection and insect bites. Everyone there was very friendly and helpful that I would recommend family and friends stay here.

Owner Response: Hi Julie. Thanks so much for your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay and I'll be sure to check on the Internet connection in my apartment. Thanks for letting me know. See you soon again. Regards, Marian

The pool, beach, and games were my son's favorites. Not to mention the staff who came to all beckons and needs with their kind, helpful, friendly, courteous, and professional manners. It took no time in the decision that this is a vacation stay to 'remember, refer, and return'. One of my favorite places to add for vacation stays. Thank you.... & See you soon!

The apartment is a beautiful bright and cosy place, perfect for couples who are looking for peace and tranquility. The beach is a plus : calm, quiet and gives the impression that you're alone in the world. Everything is clean and well taken care of. The staff are polite, respectful and friendly. There are lots of beautiful sites around the area like White River where the scenery is just like a postcard. There are 2 restaurants in front of the resort which serves delicious jamaican cuisine and more traditional european dishes if desired. We would recommend this place to all who wish to have a great vacation without stress. We would not hesitate to take this apartment next year if available.

We had such a relaxing time at Apartment 10 at Chrisanns. The apartment is filled with lovely paintings and art quilts, most of which the owner Marian did herself. It was great being able to rent the Jamaican cell phone which worked out much cheaper than using our cell from home. The beach is calm and very sheltered and the sunrises are to die for, to see the sun's rays on the very calm water. I would take my morning coffee and go down to the beach and watch the sun come up in the mornings over the water. It's really convenient having the restaurants and grocery store across the street, because we could buy breakfast and snack food and keep in the apartment and explore Ocho Rios dining places in the evenings. We took the tour to Bob Marley's birthplace in Nine Miles and that was awesome to drive through the lush countryside. We also took a taxi to Noel Coward's Firefly house and the view of the ocean from there was breathtaking. We went to Reggae Beach next door one eveing for the beach party which was great. The staff at Chrisanns are very nice and helpful too. We'll definitely come back to Chrisanns no. 10!
